Eastern Curlew by Julie Stoneman

Pen and ink on paper, with gold leaf

Artist statement:

The Eastern Curlew is one if my favourite birds with it’s super long curved beak, long legs and stunning feathers.  I used to see them regularly in the wetlands along the east coast of Tasmania 30 years ago however their numbers have declined so severely they are now listed as Critically Endangered. They breed in Russia and North eastern China and fly as far south as Tasmania every year to forage with their long beaks in the soft sands of our coastal mud flats.
